A sokwa art exhibition

may thru JUNE 2023

Sokwa, meaning "sour artist" is an adopted name and term that has been the guiding light for Sokwa’s art journey. As a person of mixed heritage, half white and half Chippewa, Sokwa was adopted by the Navajo tribe and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Even though his indigenous roots are the strongest influence in his artwork, coming to terms with his identity was an exploration of self-discovery and acceptance. Growing up fully assimilated, devoid of any indigenous culture, Sokwa found himself being praised as a trophy athlete, achieving a full football scholarship through the University of New Mexico. Through his scholarship, Sokwa pursued a major in Art Studio. Allowing him to hone in his art skills and develop a profound love for printmaking, sculpture and creating art. More importantly developing a foundation that assisted in capturing the essence of his art and indigenous heritage. Sokwa, the sour artist, invites all to partake through his art an exploration of identity, heritage, and the beauty that lies within our differences.

POLARIZER: Artist Statement

“Polarizer” is the culmination of my artistic journey thus far and embodies the dichotomy of its simple message through complicated line work. Raw and sometimes uncomfortable messages delivered in precious colors sit next to more digestible images with tedious layers. “Polarizer” echos the audience feedback I’ve received: love and hate, infatuation and disgust, as well as my personal feelings toward my journey and creations. In a time when society is extremely polarized, I vulnerably offer my soul’s solution for healing, community, and authenticity.
