Loteria: A Rachel Tapia art exhibition hosted at Secret Gallery featuring a collection of oil paintings depicting imagery inspired by the Mexican game: Loteria.

The Loteria exhibit included receptions with performances from artists: DJ Halcyon and Sazoram. Plus visual media from projection artist: Quannumthrow.

Loteria: Artist Statement

This series is a non-traditional personal reinterpretation of Loteria. Loteria is a traditional game of chance similar to bingo, but instead of using numbered balls, the game uses numbered cards with images. The cards are loosely based on the Tarot, and draw from the same visual language. These paintings are based on existing Loteria cards, but some are entirely new and reimagined.

This series is about the unpredictability of chance and luck, and working with the cards you are given.
It is about rationalizing superstition, demystifying religion, and the responsibility of creating your own luck.
